Biscayan coast: The rugged Basque coast line and the Cantabrian Sea have for centuries been an important part of life for the Basques.
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: Along the cliffs of Matxitxako you will see the tiny Islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe which sits alone at sea only connected to the mainland by a string of 241 steps. Perched on the top of this Islet there is a chapel built by seafarers in honour of their saint, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, built on the 13th century
Mundaka: We will pass through Bermeo, one of the most important fishing ports on the Cantabrian coast, and reach Mundaka. This city is a surfing mecca where you´ll see the famous ‘left-hand wave’, and it is also the ‘door’ to the breathtaking Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
Gernika: Travelling inland we reach Gernika, where you’ll see the famous Basque Assembly House and the ‘Tree of Gernika’, which is an important symbol of Basque culture and identity. The Peace Museum and the mural of ‘Gernika’ (Pablo PIcasso) help us understand the horrific event which occurred here on the 26th of April 1937, in this very town.
** ‘Txakoli’ winery: We offer the possibility of ending this excursion with a lunch in one of the best local ‘Txakoli’ wineries: local white wine (slightly sparkling and very dry) made of a variety of local grapes. Wine tasting at a boutique vineyard in the Urdaibai Reserve, and experiencing the Basque Wine are a must in a trip to the Basque Country.
